It also obtained 5th place for ease of use for website and apps and 6th place for customer service. Price seemed to be a pain point for policyholders with a ranking of 12th. Gauging an insurance company

Before buying with a company it is wise to check on a company's financial strength and complaint record. The A.M. Best rating listed above gives you an idea of Emblemhealth's financial strength to pay claims. A complaint ratio can be found on the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) site. The median complaint ratio from the NAIC is always 1.00. This means half of the insurers have a complaint ratio of under 1.00 and half have a ratio above. Basically, numbers lower than 1.00 are better with fewer complaints than the median and a number higher than 1.00 has more complaints than the median. For health insurance, EmblemHealth (NAIC# 55247) had a complaint ratio of 0.00 for individual health and 0.00 for group health for 2018. 2019 complaint numbers will be available in 2020.

Company Background

An history of firsts

EmblemHealth was created when two successful companies, Group Health Incorporated and Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York came together with complementary fortes.

GHI was the first in the country to offer dental coverage as well as the first insurer to cover preventative medicine, such as annual exams and well-baby care.

The success of HIP is largely attributed to New York’s City mayor at the time, Fiorello LaGuardia.

This New York-based provider serves approximately 3.4 million New Yorkers, making it the largest health insurer in the state. Groups and individuals can select from many levels of PPO, EPO and HMO coverage plans, as well as the ability to choose prescription drug, dental and vision insurance.
