    Essex (Newark) has now reported most of its votes. On the one hand, the huge Dem margin now has Murphy within less than a point. But, the swing from 2017 here is still more than Ciarattelli needed to win statewide. And two GOP counties have not reported at all. 38/x

    One also has to remember that Youngkin did not define himself as a businessman but as a "basketball dad." He was happy to defend his career but, unlike Romney, did not make that career the basis of his campaign. The comparisons with Romney favor Youngkin.

    Seeing lots of comparisons tonight between Youngkin and Romney. Remember: Obama defined Romney pretty aggressively as a heartless capitalist. What if McAuliffe had tried the same approach with Youngkin?

    I just looked at NJ and almost every county now shows swings to the GOP large enough to defeat Phil Murphy. Lots of votes left, and I don't know which areas are out or whether the early vote gets reported late in some places. But this is a real race, much to my shock. 35/x

    The biggest example was the way he finessed Trump. Kept his supporters without getting tangled up with him. As a result, McAuliffe’s Trump-based campaign didn’t work.
