Investment in new trains for Naples metro system’s line 1

Ten trains have been purchased during phase two of a project to expand and improve services on Naples’ Metro line 1. The new trains are made up of six cars each, running to a length of 105 metres, and can carry a maximum of 1 300 people per trip. This project completes the civil and technological work on line 1 after phase one provided for new or renovated track.

Completion of works ensures that line 1 provides services on a ring that links important areas of the city. It passes by the central district of Vomero, then makes its way to Town Hall Square and Corso Umberto, which is the city’s main commercial street. The line reaches the Piazza Garibaldi Central Station before going all the way to Capodichino Airport.

Boosting connectivity

The route ensures that four major nodes of the metro now interconnect: Piscinola, which provides an interchange with the Metrocampania north-east line that serves the Aversano basin; Cilea, which interchanges with the Circumflegrea railway line connecting the city centre with the north-western area of the province of Naples; Municipio, which provides a link with line 6, thereby connecting the city centre with the Phlegraean area; and Garibaldi station, which connects with line 2 and the national Italian railway network.

Completion of works

The previous scheme – phase one – provided for the construction of 5.1 km of new or renovated rail track, along with construction works at five stations on the route: Toledo, Municipio, Universita, Duomo and Garibaldi.

Naples Metro consists of three routes: lines 1 and 6 and the Naples Aversa railway, which connects the city to the northern suburbs. The total length of the system is about 20 km. The metro has 26 stations and makes around 46 000 000 journeys every year.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Completion of the Civil Works and realisation of the Technological Works of Line 1 of the Naples Metro - Datta Section (excluded) / Town Hall (included) / Garibaldi included) / Centro Direzionale, II. phase” is EUR 98 000 000, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 66 720 000 through the “Campania” Regional Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Transport and energy networks”.
