Lack of respect for people

Sir, LK Advani's observation in `Quotable' (DH May 5) that the government 's attitude towards the opposition boycott of Parliament shows it has no respect for the opposition puts him in poor light. By constantly boycotting sessions the opposition itself has shown lack of respect for the people: the ones who elected them.

The NDA's main grouse is because the UPA continues to harbour railway minister Laloo who they claim is tainted. It is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Were there not tainted ministers in the government conducted by the NDAS in its earlier regime? And did they yield to then opposition to dismiss them? Or did they withdraw support to Narendra Modi after the Gujarat government scandals like the Best Bakery scam?

Whatever their reasons for boycotting the sessions, these elected representatives ought to show more respect to the people who put them in the Houses. There should be legislation to stop all emoluments to the elected representatives who boycott the proceedings. Since the representatives themselves are unlikely to pass such legislation, there should be a PIL to get a Supreme Court judgement in this regard.

In retrospect, the elected representatives ought to realize that they owe it to the people to attend the sessions without fail and try to get their demands by fair means. This is dishonesty on the part of out elected representatives.

Man-animal conflict

Sir, This is with regard to the standing orders by minister for ecology, forests and environments Gurupadappa Nagamarpally on stray jumbos. If the solutions to man-animal conflict are as simple as shooting down such animals, why do we need a ministry and a minister for it?

We humans are continually encroaching into their (animals and forest) areas and after sometime it looks as if they are straying into human habitation and we find a solution by shooting them!

As a minister, it is his responsibility to cordon human encroachment into forest areas not to shoot animals that come possibly in search of food and water.

Comed-K exams

Sir, It is disturbing that there were impersonations in Comed-K exams conducted recently by private professional colleges of Karnataka for management quota seats. One hundred candidates who were debarred last year by the government for malpractices in exams are continuing their education only because they were let off by the court due to legal loopholes.

Private professional colleges of Karnataka should be extra cautious about these 1fraudsters' otherwise their colleges would be filled up only by sub-standard and unscrupulous candidates who would spoil the good name of the colleges.

Iyer's gaffe

Sir, The recent utterances of Manishankar Iyer while addressing Panchayat members sneering at Montek Singh Ahluwalia leaves a bad taste in the mouth not just for the Congress party in the State and Centre but for all those who value sanity in politics. He could have lauded the work and interest of the leaders of the local self-government without deriding the right hand man of the Prime Minister.

Comparisons are not just odious but disgusting particularly when aimed at a top civil servant. The PM must not allow Iyer to get away with this derisive behaviour but call for an explanation for his off-the-cuff outburst in a public meeting. Is the UPA supreme listening?

Police should prevent crime

Sir, While welcoming the elders’ helpline, I would suggest the following few lines to the police - Politeness, Loyalty, Integrity, Courtesy, earnestness and efficiency. These are the qualities we look for in them. Ensuring eders dignity and security is most important. The primary functions of the police are the prevention and detection of crimes, maintenance of peace and tranquillity and public order in the community (society) which they are serve.

They are the agents of law and answerable for their action. The police have got the inherent powers under the law of the land, to bring the criminals under control. Enforcement of law is in the hands of the police.

The morale of the police force has been blasted to pieces by continuous political interference in the law enforcement. So the state police force became irrelevant while dealing with the large scale disturbances and frequent calls had to be made on paramilitary force and the army to maintain law and order. The nexus between the mafia hierarchy, politicians and the police is the most formidable of the law enforcement problems. The senior citizens (elders) and the general public are not safe, and they are afraid for lives and properties.

The police should patrol in the beat area both day and night and bring to book dangerous criminals and rowdy elements with a firm hand without fear or favour. Beat and patrolling is a must on the area. As soon as criminals and rowdies see the police they stop their nefarious activities and run away. This itself can prevent crime. What is the good, if the police appear on the scene of crime after destruction of lives and properties of the citizens?
