Swinging to a new beat
P P Sneha
The City’s dance enthusiasts enjoyed an evening of fun and entertainment at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall on Saturday. ‘The Swingers’, a dance studio presented ‘At The Edge’, a dance performance by the team of Groove ‘n’ Summer.

The grand show was the culmination of the efforts of a 21-day intensive workshop in dance, choreography and musical presentation conducted by the Swingers.

The hour-long performance saw an interesting mix of salsa, hip-hop, fusion and western classical dance. The interesting thing about the workshop was that the performers ranged from the age of three to 50 years!

The show was also a fusion of the old and new. While there was a Frank Sinatra on one hand there was also a Jamelia on the other, and of course, the all-time favorite Michael Jackson. The performances by the youngsters, though amateurish, were quite entertaining.

However, the real show stealers were the ‘tiny tots’ aged between three to five years, who though clueless about what they were doing, seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly, prancing around on stage to the beats of ‘Ibiza’ and ‘Mambo No.5’.

The professional team danced to numbers by Gloria Estefan and Janet Jackson. The Swingers is a popular dance studio with several performances in London, New York, Kuwait, Dubai and other places to their credit. The studio conducts workshops in several styles of dance, including western classical, salsa, hip-hop and fusion all over the world. The company also boasts of workshops in acting and musical presentation conducted by teachers from US and Australia.

Says Prasanna, artistic director of 'The Swingers,' “We teach people how to perform in a professional set up. We give them the confidence to confront a live audience. The medium to achieve this could be anything-dance, drama and music.” The team will be back in June for another workshop.
