NatureConnections
This unique project of the Chicago Public Library brings materials and programs about natural history to children. Made possible by the generous support of the Hermon Dunlap and Ellen Thorne Smith Fund through the Chicago Public Library Foundation, this project is a celebration of the Smith's interest in bringing the world of nature to children in Chicago. Book Collections:
Each of the Chicago Public Library's 79 branches, Regional Libraries and the Thomas Hughes Children's Library have specialized collections of books, magazines, pamphlets, videos and realia (such as ostrich eggs and rock collections) just for children. Here a child may find the latest book on dinosaurs, or soar with the peregrine falcons in beautifully illustrated stories, and informational texts. Then they may touch, feel and experiment with the objects in the collections such as fossil prints or feathers. This integrated learning helps children to explore, respect and reaffirm nature.
Fishing Poles:
Through the NatureConnections Project, the Rods and Reads Program makes fishing materials available for children in nine branch libraries. The goal of this fishing initiative is to provide sustainable, long-term resources and programs that promote lifelong learning at the Chicago Public Library.
