The Liver, Pancreas and Biliary Surgical Center of Excellence aims to provide patient centered, cost effective care of hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) disease using the latest advances in research, techniques, and a multidisciplinary team approach. Central to these efforts is the HPB team consisting of Scott Helton, MD, Thomas Biehl, MD, Flavio Rocha, MD, Ravi Moonka, MD, and Adnan Alseidi, MD, who work closely with our providers in the Liver and Pancreatic Centers of Excellence.
Virginia Mason is a high-volume hospital for the surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer and our team of experts has shown exemplary outcomes in pancreas cancer treatment, specifically in pancreatic resections.
According to the Comprehensive Hospital Abstract Reporting System (CHARS), Virginia Mason’s HPB team has participated in a significantly higher number of both Whipple procedures and distal pancreatectomies than other medical institutions in the area. Studies have shown that hospitals that perform a high number of these procedures have lower mortality rates. Additionally, both the average length of stay and cost of care at Virginia Mason for both Whipple procedures and distal pancreatectomies is significantly lower than other medical institutions in the area.
