Governance

Virginia Mason is a nonprofit health care provider governed by boards of community volunteers. The Medical Center is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Board has adopted governance policies and practices to help guide its fulfillment of its commitment to the community and the patients we serve.

In 2008 Virginia Mason won the inaugural Leapfrog Governance for Quality Award for the work its board has done to mobilize the organization to improve quality of patient care.

Chairman and CEO
Gary S. Kaplan, MD, FACP, FACMPE, was named Chairman and CEO of Virginia Mason in February 2000.

Committees and Advisory Boards

The Virginia Mason Health System (VMHS) Board has six standing committees and the Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC) Board has five standing committees. Virginia Mason has three advisory boards; the Board of Governors, the Bailey-Boushay House Board and the Virginia Mason Foundation Board
