Just recently I saw a High Court Judge taking a walk in the evening along one of the streets in Gaborone. As Judge of the highest Court in the land, this man deals with hard-core criminals on a daily basis. He sends them to prison and even condemns some of them to death. The nature of his job makes him an enemy to criminals. He deals with people who have no regard for human life.

The problem with Botswana is not its education system. The problem does not lie in the type of diplomas and degrees given by her universities. There is nothing wrong with Botswana graduates. Many of them are comparable to graduates graduating from universities around the world.

When delivering his State of the Nation Address, President Ian Khama returned to his favorite line quoting the London based Transparency international.

He said the organization has for twenty consecutive year’s ranked Botswana among the least corrupt countries in the world and the least corrupt in Africa.

A frequent public rebuke to opposition Members of Parliament is that their performance has been well below what was expected of them given their significantly increased numbers and also the quality that sprawls the opposition benches.

It is a false supposition.

Public expectations on opposition after the 2014 elections have been high – perhaps unrealistically so.

The International Criminal Court is currently facing the most difficult existential test since it was established in 2002/3.

Depending on how these difficulties are resolved or not resolved, the ICC will emerge stronger of irreparably damaged.

Because the very existence of the ICC is at question, it is clearly within reasonable fathom that the whole edifice might yet collapse.

This was a challenging trip but also an eye opener. If you are to get into Orapa, a permit has to be sort for you.

A colleague from the University of Botswana recently asked me an open and genuine question. “How do we fix our ailing economy Thabo?  Certainly we can no longer sit and pretend all is fine, we can no longer listen to the lies provided by the political party in power. We cannot just look at a system that favours political relationships over competence.

It is official! Kenny Kapinga, former Deputy Commissioner of Police and ambassador to South Africa and Zimbabwe in the recent past has joined the BCP. The move by Kapinga has caused consternation and panic within the ranks of the BDP. First, it was Shaw Kgathi, the BDP Deputy Secretary General, who derided Kapinga on radio for sharing his perspectives on the state of the Republic.
