Flannery will never forget May 13, 2015 when she experienced a stroke during a camping trip to Utah with her classmates.
“I felt the most severe pain I can imagine on the right side of my head,” she recalls. “I thought someone had hit me in the head with a newly-sharpened ax.”
Chaperones recognized she was in trouble when she couldn’t stand and rushed her to a clinic in Moab where a CT scan revealed a stroke. She was airlifted to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City. She was hospitalized for more than a month and had to learn to walk, eat and use her left side again.
